I process all my own shaft wood from lumber I personally pick for quality. I have control over all aspects and timing of cuts. This is the only way to ensure a great end product. I do not try or even have any desire to get the whitest shaft wood. Its been my experience that the really white shafts do not play nearly as good as the other shafts. I still care about the overall look of the wood but my shafts are seldom super white. I grade my shafts on two main characteristics Straightness of grain (from tip to joint) and Ring count/weight (growth rings per inch and overall shaft weight). This is not to say that shafts that don't have these characteristics wont play well there are exceptions to every rule. My main concern is playability. I want a shaft that plays great and stays straight!
